Greater Than Ourselves: A Reprise

Greater Than Ourselves: A Reprise

1 CE hour

Following the success of their June 2017 presentation, Barry Svigals, FAIA and Duo Dickinson, FAIA will continue with a reprise of the discussion.

Please come and join the conversation! Wine and cheese will be served.

Duo Dickinson FAIA, went to Cornell, partnered with Louis Mackall, and has had his own firm for 30 years. He has helped create hundreds of places to live and worked with over 100 not for profits to make things better. For Duo, making things has meant awards, teaching, talking, and writing. His many articles and public presentations have added to the public’s awareness of the value of architecture.

Artist, architect, writer and public speaker, Barry Svigals, FAIA is the founder of Svigals + Partners, an architecture and art firm, whose mission is to nurture and inspire prosperous, compassionate communities. He believes we are all creative and that capacity needs to find expression in living and working together. His love of sculpture and figurative art led to its integration into the architecture of his firm, bringing back an historical tradition and providing a dimension of deeper meaning.

Mass Timber in Architecture

Mass Timber in Architecture

3 HSW

With Jim DeStefano, P.E., AIA, F.SEI and Alan Organschi

For architecturally exposed structures, nothing beats the look and feel of timber. Timber is not just a structural system, it is also an architectural feature. It is often the most practical, cost effective, and sustainable choice when architectural drama is needed and a more mundane structure just will not do.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Timber form follows function
  • Introduction to mass timber
  • Traditional and contemporary timber framing
  • Glulam construction
  • Cross Laminated Timber (CLT)

Jim DeStefano, P.E., AIA, F.SEI is the president of DeStefano & Chamberlain Inc. located in Fairfield. He is a structural engineer and a licensed architect with 40 years of experience designing timber structures.

Alan Organschi is the design principal and partner at Gray Organschi Architecture located in New Haven. Alan is also a member of the faculty at Yale School of Architecture.
